Streaming Audio with mp3 is a bit more complicated. First you need a much
faster connection to the Internet than for Real Audio. But if you have
a fast connection anyway, it is recommended to use the '
download'
option right away. If you still want to use streaming audio instead, you
will have to use a mp3-player like
WinAmp1.92.
Start the player, select 'open URL' or 'open location' and type in the
following adress (you might mark, copy, and paste as well):

It happens that you get error messages like 'file not found'. Those
messages are WRONG. Here and on any other troubles turn to the '
download'
option!
Otherwise the player (if it is installed right) should connect to the

How does RealAudio work and what is the
required equipment?
RealAudio is a software to compress Audio-data by reducing
it to the assumed most important informations. This is essential to make
Audio on the Internet possible as the following example may show: A 4:00
minute song file in the regular CD audio format has the size of 40 MB.
To download such afile with a 28.8 modem would take more than 3 hours if
no errur occurs. A reduced RealAudio file depending on the grade of the
compression is sized only 260 KB to 2,4 MB. But it has to be remarked that
the size of the file determines the quality of the sound. It reaches from
somewhat HIFI Stereo to AM.
Hardware: A basic sound card or audio card like
Soundblaster16 is a sufficient device in combination with speakers, headphones
or a cable to your HIFI Amplifier. If you can play other sound files you
will be able to play this one as well.
Software:-The software you
need to play this file is the Real Audio Player or Real Media Player.
The required version is 3.0 or higher. The most recent version is 5.0.
This player is a recommended Plug In for your Netscape Browser or Internet
Browser and is used all over the world to compress audio files. This is
necessary because an uncompressed file (that features better quality of
cause) for a 4:15 stereo song is about 45 MB. The Real Audio file in Mono
only 0.5 MB. It would take you hours to download an uncompressed file with
a 28.8. modem. This is why you can't hear the song in better quality yet.
So if you don't have the Real Audio Player yet, download
your Real Audio Player now.
Problems?
1) weird data or only the text "pnm://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/..."
is displayed by your browser? Check if RealAudio Player or (RealMedia Player)
is installed at all. If yes, check your browsers (Netscape/Microsoft Internet
Explorer) options/preferences: files with the extensions "*.ra", "*.ram",
"*.rm" should be started/handeled by the RealAudio Player.
2) option 'Listen to ...': It can happen Netscape (or the Internet-Explorer)
does not start the RealAudio Player but offers to save the file to disk
instead. Then you should save the file to disk with the extension "*.ra",
"*.rm" or "*.ram" and start it from your Windows-Explorer. Another possibility
is: Check on Options/Preferences of your browser, change file handling
for those extensions from save to disk to open with RealAudio Player.
x) A general alternative to starting the file by the browser is to
start the Real Audio Player from your Desktop or your Windows-Explorer
before downloading and Open the URL of the song: In this example it means
Open URL: "http://www.onlovestar.com/noise/nirvana-plugged-out/nirvana-plugged-out-mono.ra".
This option also allows you to influence the buffer management: It depends
on how your presettings in "View""Preferences""General""Buffer" are set,
whether your PC starts to play immediately or after a certain time of downloading.
The right presetting depends on how fast the Internet access is. If the
song is interrupted while playing you will have to increase the buffer
value. Anyway you can prelisten with a small buffer value, then wait until
the complete song is downloaded and listen again. This buffer management
makes it possible to download ISDN-files as well with a 28.8 modem. It
only takes a little longer until the song can be listened to in full length.
y) A further explaination: For each soundfile two RealAudio files exist:
The first has the extension "*.ra". This is the real sound file to get
played by the RealAudio player. The other file has the extension "*.ram".
This file only delivers non-audio information your RealAudio player needs
in case the first file has not been (temporarily) stored on your hard disk.
z) Any problems that are different? This service will only be
